2023 Stockmanship/Grazing Infrastructure Training

2023 Stockmanship/Grazing Infrastructure Training
October 3 @ 8:00 am - October 4 @ 5:00 pm

Come join us for a two-day Stockmanship Training featuring Curt Pate. This will be a hands-on event limited to 40 people per day. Topics will include Stockmanship principles using cattle and sheep for training purposes. This event is a follow up of the successful VFGC Winter conference series held in January of 2023. This two-day event will include farm and ranch layout for fencing systems and working facilities. The STAYTUFF crew will hold fence building sessions covering layout, bracing, post selection, fence fabric selection, gate placement and new ideas and options. Electric fence sessions will be expanded to include building and maintaining permanent and portable systems. Energizer selection and troubleshooting issues in the field will be instructed by the Gallagher Team. Watering options and placement, including water gaps, will be covered and installed. Proper livestock catch pens will be set up for containment and working which will include cattle and sheep. Livestock movement from pasture to pasture and pasture to pen covered with both species. Our goal is to cover a ranching and farming system to make it easy on the livestock as well as the owner or hand working the outfit. Ranch grub will be provided for lunch each day and the agenda will be geared toward issues farmers and ranchers face in their day-to-day schedule. We will do our best to make sure you leave with a better understanding of stockmanship principles, fencing options, and correct placement & design.
This is something that has been asked about for some time and we were finally able to put it together! We are very excited to be the first in the Country to pull this off! With the input and help from Virginia Cattlemen’s and The Virginia Forage and Grassland Council, this will be an exciting two days! This special event will be held and hosted by Jeff Slaven along with his family and crew. Jeff and his family own and operate a very successful cattle operation in Weyers Cave, VA. They have been very gracious in letting
us use their place for this training as well as livestock.
