Virginia, prove your hay is the best! Submit an entry for the 2020 Southeastern Hay Contest! #virginiaforages #sehaycontestThe 2020 Southeastern Hay Contest is now accepting entries from thirteen states, including Virginia. The competition was started in 2004 by forage extension specialists in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida in conjunction with the Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, Georgia with the goal of promoting quality hay production and better understanding of the economic importance of forage testing.

There are now seven categories for entry: warm-season perennial grass hay, cool-season perennial grass hay, alfalfa hay, perennial peanut hay, mixed annual grass or other hay, grass baleage, and legume baleage.

The top three entries within each category, based on relative forage quality (RFQ), will receive cash prizes. First place - $150; second place - $100; third place - $75. The overall highest RFQ will receive a $1,000 cash prize AND the choice of the use of a new Massey Ferguson RK Series rotary rake or a new Massey Ferguson DM Series professional disc mower for the 2021 hay production season.

Each hay/baleage sample, entry form, and analysis and entry fees ($22 total) must be received by the UGA FEW Lab by Tuesday, September 1, 2020. Samples received after September 1 will automatically be considered for the 2021 competition. For Virginia producers, samples submitted to agents before August 1, 2020 will be bulk mailed to avoid individual shipping charges by producers.

Each forage sample should include a quart/pint size bag of core sample from 5-10 bales (this will be used for lab analysis). Hay samples should include an additional grab sample in a gallon size bag (this will be used for display for top category finishers at the Sunbelt Ag Expo), this display sample is not required for baleage entries.

Winners will be notified by October 1, 2020 and awards will be presented on October 20, 2020 at the Sunbelt Ag Expo.
